Why Mental Health Is at the Heart of This Event

Mental health is one of the most pressing — and most overlooked — health challenges of our time, and young people are among the hardest hit. Anxiety, depression, and everyday stress are rising among youth, yet many still face real barriers to getting help: long waitlists, high costs, and care that doesn’t reflect their language or culture.

The RBC Huatuo Invitational exists to close that gap. Named after Hua Tuo, the legendary second-century Chinese physician, the tournament blends acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and modern healthcare to make mental health support more accessible, more holistic, and more human.

Every net dollar raised goes to the non-profit Huatuo Clinic to fund three concrete programs:

• Subsidized counselling and stress-management programs — lowering the cost barrier so more young people can get help early.

• Culturally informed care in patients’ preferred languages — so no one has to explain their pain in a language that isn’t their own.

• Youth and family wellness workshops and resources — building healthy coping skills and stronger support at home.

This isn’t a generic charity cause. The Invitational is built to fund something specific and traceable — a defined program, in a defined community, over a defined year.

When you play, you’re funding real counselling hours, real workshops, and real care for young people who need it.

A Different Kind of Charity Tournament

The RBC Huatuo Invitational is designed around a simple idea: a curated field, a focused beneficiary, and a meaningful evening.

It’s as much about the conversation over dinner as the shots on the course — a chance for players, sponsors, and volunteers to come together around a cause that touches every family.

Looking Back: A Growing Movement for Mental Health

2024 — The Inaugural Year

The very first RBC Huatuo Invitational teed off at the Hamptons Golf Club in Calgary — billed as the first charity golf tournament of its kind in Canada, uniting sport with holistic healthcare.

Despite windy conditions, the event was a resounding success, raising $20,000 for youth mental health initiatives through acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

On the green, Jun Yan claimed the individual title with a score of 75, while the team of Luke Zhao, Simon Deng, Bobby Chao, and William Huang took the team crown at an impressive 15 under par.

With RBC as title sponsor and support from partners including Sun Life and the Hong Kong Canadian Business Association, the inaugural event set the template for everything that followed — proving that a day of golf could put real resources behind a health crisis too often left in the shadows.

2025 — Bigger and Better

Building on that momentum, the 2025 tournament welcomed RBC back as title sponsor and expanded the field to 144 players — a testament to how quickly this cause has grown into a highlight of Calgary’s summer calendar.

As the field grew, so did the reach of the mental-health programs it funds.

Be Part of 2026

Three years in, the RBC Huatuo Invitational has become more than a golf tournament — it’s a movement putting youth mental health front and centre.

This year adds expanded community programming and a silent auction, giving even more ways to support young people and their families.

Come for the golf. Stay for the dinner. Play for someone’s mental health — for something bigger than the scorecard.
